Firefighters battle house blazes

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Ada Area firefighters were kept busy last week battling two house fires.

The first fire occurred just east of Ada in the 1800 block of County Road 1505 Thursday. Firefighters from Happyland, Byng, Ada and Homer responded. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from outside the home.

A report from the Ada Fire Department said the fire was contained mostly to one room but did spread into the attic.

Firefighters were able to make a quick “knock down” of the fire. The Red Cross was called in to assist the family.

The second house fire was just off U.S. 377 in the 1400 block of Sandy Creek Lane Saturday. The fire originally started in a shed and spread to the home. When Ada firefighters arrived, the northwest corner of the home was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters began battling the blaze and called for extra water and support. Firefighters from Pickett brought in a tanker truck. Firefighters entered the house to do an inside attack on the flames which had spread to the attic.

Ada Fire Engine 10 stopped running and all firefighters immediately cleared the structure. The fire truck was restarted and firefighters resumed the battle.

Firefighters from Oil Center arrived and assisted in the fight. The fire damaged about 25 percent of the home and several other items including two beds, a TV and other electronics, children’s toys, other furniture and the rest of the home suffered smoke damage.

The renter of the house told firefighters he did not have insurance and neither did the owner. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
