CPU Club hosts lecture series

The CPU Club, East Central University’s Student Chapter of the ACM, will host ECU’s College of Health & Sciences Student Leadership and Lecture Series Sept.11 [THURSDAY].

Dr. Henry Neeman, director of the University of Oklahoma’s Supercomputing Center for Education and Research, will discuss “Supercomputing in Plain English.”

The one-hour lecture will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Room 120 of the Physical & Environmental Sciences Building. Refreshments and informal discussion will follow.

Neeman also is an adjunct assistant professor in OU’s School of Computer Science.

He collaborates with dozens of research groups, applying high performance computing techniques in such fields as numerical weather prediction, bioinformatics and genomics, data mining, high energy physics, astronomy, nanotechnology, petroleum reservoir management, river basin modeling and engineering optimization. He is an ad hoc advisor to student researchers in many of these fields.

His research interests include high performance computing, scientific computing, parallel and distributed computing, structured adaptive mesh refinement and scientific visualization.

Neeman holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and bachelor’s degree in statistics with a minor in mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a doctorate in computer science from UIUC.

He was a postdoctoral research associate at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at UIUC and was a graduate research assistant both at NCSA and at the Center for Supercomputing Research & Development.
