County 4-H’er named state record book winner at Roundup

Stillwater A Pontotoc County 4-H’er took top honors when he was named a state record book winner.

Garrett Thompson, Ada, was named the state achievement record book winner during the 87th

State 4-H Roundup that took place recently at Oklahoma State University. He was presented with a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Harold and Edith Shaw Memorial.

Thompson has been an active 4-H’er for six years and is a member of the Byng 4-H Club. During his 4-H career he has conducted a number of workshops and programs in the areas of safety, health and nutrition and science and technology. He was instrumental in organizing the statewide service project “Tunes 4 the Troops.” This project collected new and used CDs and DVDs to send to troops overseas.

Thompson said 4-H has been a big influence on his life.

“The 4-H public speaking project has had the biggest influence by enabling me to better express my thoughts, as well as speak more effectively,” he said.

Some of his 4-H honors and activities include Pontotoc County 4-H Ambassador, Top Junior Record Book and Grand Champion at the Pontotoc County Horse Show. His leadership roles include Southeast District Action Team and Pontotoc County Leadership Team Chairman.

Other honors and activities include 2008 People to People Sports Ambassador for Youth World Friends Games in Holland, U.S. Space Camp national scholarship winner and being named among the top academic students at Byng Junior High.

He is the son of Bill and Lisa Thompson.
