Sasakwa School receives new playground equipment

SASAKWA — During the summer months, several volunteers at Sasakwa Public School obtained additional playground equipment on loan from Wewoka Head Start Program.

Volunteers and helpers included Angela and Kenny Reich, Sandy Chambliss and Kenny Chambliss, Gene Choate Sr., Gene Choate Jr. C.J. Olivo and Paul Jarvis. Sasakwa Public School Superintendent James Mathews expressed his appreciation for the efforts to make the school environment more user-friendly for students.

Volunteers installed and painted equipment, playground fencing and built a border around the sand lot. Equipment added to the playground include a climbing bar slide, a playhouse with sand buckets, borders and fencing. Plans are being made to conduct fund-raisers for additional improvements and new playground equipment.

Mathews ordered an AED (automatic electronic defibrillator) for use when heart problems arise in students or other school employees. The AED will be located by the high school principal’s office in the hallway for ease of access. Inservice training for effective use of the device was scheduled. Classes for CPR certification will be conducted during the semester as well. An AED is a vital asset to early emergency treatment when cardiac difficulties arise and is a means for successful first aid efforts.

Bathrooms for elementary boys and girls are being renovated by the Bartlett Plumbing Company and other employees for greater utility and attractiveness.

Abstinence Only classes began Sept. 15 for students in grades 7-12 with younger students doing eight class sessions titled “Best Path.” High school students will complete eight class sessions titled Choosing the Best Journey. The total number of students for whom this curriculum is available is 119 (60 boys and 59 girls). The curriculum is funded by a federal abstinence education grant the school received in July. Parental permission is required for students to attend the sessions. Class sessions are taught by the school nurse, Catherine White, R.N., M.A.
