Health centers partner with Cybex

The Chickasaw Nation Wellness Centers in Ada and Ardmore recently purchased pink treadmills in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The manufacturer, Cybex International, Inc., will pay 10¢ a mile to support breast cancer research for every mile logged on the new pink 750T for the month of October 2009, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“This partnership provides a unique opportunity for more people to become involved in the battle against breast cancer,” said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. “We are pleased to partner with CYBEX and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation on this innovative initiative which gives every visitor to our centers the chance to work toward a cure for breast cancer by simply choosing to use the pink treadmills as part of their October workout.”

Paul Juris, Ed.D, Executive Director of the CYBEX Institute, said the treadmill program could help raise awareness of a little known fact about breast cancer prevention.

“Although the positive effects of exercise have long been known to reduce obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease – less well-known is that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer.” said Juris. “Data supports women of any age can reduce their breast cancer risk up to 23% with 6 or more hours/week of moderate exercise.”

By providing access to equipment and services offered at the three wellness centers in Ada, Ardmore and Tishomingo, the Chickasaw Nation is hoping to help build a healthier community and reduce the health disparities faced by many Native Americans today.

Membership to each facility is free for tribal citizens and employees and is also open to community members for a small fee.

The wellness centers provide education, mentoring, monitoring, incentives and access to activities to promote exercise, nutrition and overall improved health, including aerobics, weight training and many other activities.
