Stonewall-McLish Education Foundation awards first scholarships

Stonewall The Stonewall-McLish Education Foundation (SMEF) awarded its first scholarships to three Stonewall seniors at the Stonewall High School commencement exercises on May 22 in the Murphy/Roberts Gymnasium at Stonewall.

Danielle Chelsea-Rennae Hill received $500 for the fall 2008 semester, to be renewed for the spring 2009 semester if eligibility requirements are met. Danielle was presented a letter and certificate from LeaAnn Pharr, Treasurer of SMEF.

Brittany Danielle Burnes received $500 for the fall 2008 semester, to be renewed for the spring 2009 semester if eligibility requirements are met. Brittany was presented a letter and certificate from Barbara Skelton, member of the SMEF Fundraising Committee.

Cherokee Lee Brown received $500 for the fall 2008 semester, to be renewed for the spring 2009 semester if eligibility requirements are met. Cherokee was presented a letter and certificate from Katherine Howry, Vice President of SMEF.

As shared during the commencement exercises by Janelle Robinson, SMEF president, the Foundation was established in 2005. Its basic purpose has been to enhance the quality of education for all students in the Stonewall School System. These 2008 awards mark the first time resources have been in place to allow the support of students directly through scholarships. These resources are made possible by donations given by various individuals and corporations. The Foundation is grateful for every donation, regardless of size. The next step in the Foundation plans will be to provide grants to classroom teachers.

For more information on the Stonewall-McLish Education Foundation or to provide a donation, phone Gail Wood, Board Facilitator at 580-777-4777.
