Roff council heated

Justin Lofton Staff Writer

Roff Following the voicing of a concern by Roff town councilmember and former mayor Mitchell Smith, the Roff town council meeting got a little heated Monday evening.

Smith expressed concern after the previous month’s financial records were presented late at the meeting and council members were given little time to review them.

“I think it’s difficult to make a business decision getting them tonight,” Smith said.

“I do, too,” Mayor Todd McCaskill said. “I don’t get them when the agenda goes out. I get them the day of the meeting.”

“Some people need to start doing their job, don’t they?” Councilmember Bob Penrod said.

“We get the bills in right now. We get them in on Monday so they can’t be done in a couple days,” town treasurer/clerk Janice Gimlin said.

Penrod had introduced a motion to discontinue monthly pay to Gimlin, but the motion failed.

“You need to be out here,” Penrod said.

“No, I don’t,” Gimlin said.

“Yeah, you do,” Penrod said.

“No, I don’t,” Gimlin said.

“Yeah, you do. Do your job like you were elected to do,” Penrod said.

“You’re stupid,” Gimlin said. Penrod insisted that Gimlin be removed from the meeting.

“Right now you’re disrupting a public meeting, so you need to move on,” Police Chief Glenn Bohanon said. No one was ejected from the meeting.

The financial records were tabled until the next meeting.

During park committee report, Gimlin said the Roff park committee could not account for $1,500 in donations by Ada business owners.

“I think she (Casey McCaskill) and Sharon (Spikes) went over it, looked it over and didn’t find any discrepancies,” Todd McCaskill said. Casey McCaskill, Todd McCaskill’s wife, and Spikes head the park committee.

“I guess I need to see because I’m the treasurer,” Gimlin said.” There’s a little receipt book and I know at least $1,500 was donated by businessmen in Ada and that money was never deposited into the park fund.”

Todd McCaskill said Gimlin would have to confer with Casey McCaskill and Spikes to resolve the discrepancy. Smith requested that the next week’s agenda include discussing getting a third party to check into the matter.
