Salvation Army kicks off season of giving

ADA — The Salvation Army will kick off the season of giving Saturday, Nov. 21, at Walmart located at 1419 N. Country Club Road.

State Rep. Todd Thompson will be at the Walmart grocery entrance at 9 a.m. to put the first donation in the kettle. The goal for the Kettle Season is $25,000 and an additional $5,000 from the Mail Appeal. The number of requests for assistance for food baskets, Angels, and other has increased tremendously this year. Donations at the kettle will help make a difference in the number of people that the Salvation Army can assist.

The kettle season goes hand in hand with the Angel Tree program that The Salvation Army offers during the holiday season. The Angel Tree program has been part of the Salvation Army’s Christmas mission since the 1990’s. The Red Kettle tradition began in 1891 in San Francisco, California. This year, the National Kick-off will be held during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the Oakland Raiders on Thanksgiving Day with Daughtry being the half-time entertainment.

The Salvation Army is running holiday assistance programs in order to meet the needs in our community. Many residents are unaware that Salvation Army exists in Ada. With the holiday’s approaching, as the familiar red kettles pop up at local stores, many will ask “what does The Salvation Army do with the donations?”

In answer to this question, Salvation Army Capt. Frankco Higdon said all donations made to a red kettle in Pontotoc and Coal counties stay in these counties to help The Salvation Army ability to provide assistance to its neighbors in need. Thousands of meals are made with food from our pantry, community children get to experience camp, people are clothed and assistance is granted for electric and gas bills in the heat of the summer and cold of winter to name just a few.
