ARC reports results of hazardous waste collection event

Ada Recycling Coalition meet Nov 14 at city of Ada west annex. Presiding officer was Garmon Smith.

The following members and guests were present:  Garmon Smith, Trudy Nevland, Ambrie Walker, Dana Nickell, Dave Jones, Jim Miller, Glenda DeShazo, Marilyn Ellis and Barbara Young.

Glenda DeShazo presented the treasurer’s report and Trudy Nevland supplied the minutes from the October month’s meeting.

Garmon Smith said the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event went very well. It was well managed with a lot of volunteers and a record number of participants (253 vehicles).  Smith also listed several items that were collected during the event, including:  antifreeze (60 gallons) used motor oil (470 gallons) lead batteries (90) tires (314) and e-waste (2.5 semi loads).

In addition, the Chickasaw Nation collected white goods (appliances) for the first time.  ARC collected and mixed almost 100 gallons of white and 30 gallons of colored latex paint saving the city approximately $1,200 in disposal costs.  Much of this paint was donated to the Byng Drama Department.

America Recycles Day – Pledge cards were placed in a box and Richard Barron did the honors of drawing for a mulching mower. The winner was Shellie Horton.  Three other names were drawn for T-shirts; they were Lain Underwood, Mack Peterson and Sammie Montgomery. All pledge cards will be sent to Oklahoma City for state drawings this month.

Chickasaw Nation Recycling – The Chickasaw Nation, represented by Ambrie Walker and Dana Nickell, were commended for their exemplary recycling efforts for our community.  In 2007 the Chickasaw Nation acquired an EPA recycling grant, began a recycling program in Ada, began a white-goods collection program, added a community recycling drop-off site, supported the city's household hazardous waste collection event with volunteers, recycled an abundance of e-waste and began an ink-cartridge collection program.

Telephone Book Collection Contest – The Ada Recycling Coalition is hosting its 10th annual telephone book collection contest for area schools.  The winning classroom at each participating school will be awarded a pizza party and the school collecting the most phone books overall will receive $150!  Trudy reported that flyers were sent to area schools and asked that members help promote the contest by forwarding flyers to students and teachers who may be interested in participating.  Contact Trudy Nevland at 436-8100 for more information

City of Ada Recycling – Dave Jones reported that cardboard prices were down but that the e-waste collection event last month was a huge success.

The Met ARD Banquet in Tulsa – Garmon Smith, representing ARC and OKRA, is scheduled to accept an award for Susan Paddack, who is unable to attend, on November 15.  Ms. Paddack’s “Legislator of the Year” award is being given for her efforts in presenting a recycling bill in the state legislature.
