Pontotoc County Retired Educators observe Education Week

ADA — Pontotoc County Retired Educators Association held its monthly meeting Nov. 14, earlier than usual in order to observe Education Week and National Educators Day. The meeting was held at the Ada Elks Lodge.

Members were welcomed by President Ruth Ann Taylor. Dorotha Fenton gave the invocation. Following the lunch, Taylor dispensed the regular business in order to honor two special people and give audience to a guest speaker.

Minutes from the previous meeting, prepared by Judy Hisaw, and the treasury report, prepared by Tom Stephens, were on the tables for each member to peruse for accuracy or questions.

The Pontotoc County Retired Educators Association (PCREA) honoree this year for dedicated work in education and the community was Edna Mae Cooley. Todd Thomsen, state representative, Dr. Charles Barrick representing Susan Paddack, state senator and Barbara Young, Ada City Council representing Mayor Frank Stout, presented Proclamations of Honor to Cooley. Taylor presented Cooley with a framed picture of the Little Red School House from PCREA.

Viva Jean Stonecipher was honored with a proclamation of Appreciation, a plaque for all she has done for PCREA and education. Everyone was provided beautiful stationary and asked to write a special note to be mailed to her along with the plaque as she now resides in Bristow.

Following the presentations, Dr. Don Stafford, retired East Central University science professor, entertained by reading some of his poetry and relating some amusing anecdotes, mostly relating to his upbringing and teaching experience.

Cooley announced that PCREA now has 264 paid members.

Autumn and Thanksgiving were the themes for the table decorations which were provided by Taylor, Peggy Wallace and Dorothy Milligan. In a drawing, Ernie Staggs and Lily Mae Cagle won the table centerpieces which were fresh autumn arrangements.

The next meeting will be December 14 at Ada Elks Lodge at 11 a.m. Christmas music will be provided by Linda Cooper and Debra Nolen.
