Firefighters scramble to save homes from large grass fire

By Randy Mitchell

Staff Writer

A controlled burn quickly got out of control and threatened several homes as well as livestock and barns north of Ada Friday.

Firefighters from Ada, Byng, Homer, Chickasaw Nation BIA and Francis responded to the blaze just west of Country Club Rd. The fire spread rapidly to the north and west. Firefighters scrambled to save several homes and other structures and livestock. At one point, several horses were cornered by the fire until firefighters on several trucks were able to save them. A barn filled with hay was spared as firefighters doused flames a few feet from the structure. When high, gusty winds pushed the flames into residential yards, homeowners picked up garden hoses to douse the flames.

A report from the Ada Fire Department said the fire started when a person was burning debris and the fire got out of hand. Low humidity and gusty winds helped to fuel the flames. The fire burned across several property lines and consumed 43 acres. No structures were lost but some property was destroyed including round bales of hay, a batting cage and a vineyard. Damage was estimated at $4,000, the report said.
