Oklahoma lake report for August 31, 2008

Oklahoma City (AP) — Here are the conditions at Oklahoma lakes as reported Wednesday, Aug. 27, by the state Department of Wildlife Conservation and lake rangers.

CENTRAL

Hefner: Crappie good on small jigs along the dam. Report submitted by Blake Pearson, game warden stationed in Oklahoma County.

Overholser: Channel catfish slow on stinkbait. Report submitted by Blake Pearson, game warden stationed in Oklahoma County.

Thunderbird: Elevation 2 ft. above normal, water murky. White bass good trolling inline spinnerbaits, medium-diving crankbaits and sassy shad around points and humps, also look for surfacing activity early mornings. Saugeye good on sassy shad, jigs and medium-diving crankbaits at 7 to 10 ft. off points. Report submitted by Tony Woodruff, game warden stationed in Cleveland County.

Wes Watkins: Elevation 1 ft. above normal, water 80 to 85 degrees and clearing. Crappie fair to good on minnows and jigs at 4-5 ft. around structure and boat dock areas. Sunfish very active. Catfish fair on chicken livers, cut baits, shad, worms and stinkbaits. White bass good trolling light colored crankbaits, some schooling. Largemouth bass fair to good on assorted soft plastics, smoke colored tube jigs and sinkos working very good; topwater in the early morning. Report submitted by M. Fowler.

NORTHEAST

Bell Cow: Elevation normal, water murky. Bass fair on plastics. Channel catfish fair on doughbaits. Crappie good on minnows and jigs. Carp fair on doughbaits. Report submitted by Gary Emmons, game warden stationed in Lincoln County.

Birch: Elevation normal, water 82 degrees and clear. Striped bass hybrids good on topwater lures early and late. Channel and blue catfish excellent on cut shad and stinkbait. Largemouth bass fair on buzzbaits in late evening. Crappie fair on minnows at 8 to 12 ft. around structure. Report submitted by Spencer Grace, game warden stationed in Osage County.

Chandler: Elevation normal, water murky. Bass fair on plastics. Channel catfish good on live baits. Crappie fair on minnows. Report submitted by Gary Emmons, game warden stationed in Lincoln County.

Grand: Upper end — Elevation above normal, water 86 degrees and clear. Largemouth bass excellent on all baits. Smallmouth bass good on small spinnerbaits in all rivers. White bass excellent on small spinnerbaits and minnows at night with lights in the water. Catfish excellent on secret seven dip bait, shad, sunfish, gold fish and shrimp at 25 to 40 ft. Greenleaf: Elevation normal, water clear. Largemouth bass good on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and topwater lures in creek channels and shoreline weed beds. Channel catfish good on stinkbaits and cut baits on bottom. Crappie fair on minnows and jigs around fishing docks and brush structure. Report submitted by Lark Wilson, game warden stationed in Muskogee County.

Lower Illinois: Elevation normal, water 64 degrees and clear. Largemouth bass good on topwater lures around moss beds and rocky points. Striped bass excellent on live trout and shad at 2 to 10 ft. all along river. Channel catfish excellent on live shad and cut bait in deep holes all along river. Walleye good on minnows and jigs on bottom at the mouth of the river. Saugeye good on minnows on bottom, best at the mouth of the river. Trout slow; all stocking held up to water temperatures. Oologah: Elevation 5 ft. above normal and steady. Water murky on the south end and muddy on the north end. Water in mid to upper 80’s. Blue catfish fair on juglines with shad at 15 to 20 ft. on flats. Crappie fair on minnows and jigs at 10 to 15 ft. around brush piles. White bass fair trolling shad colored crankbaits at 10 to 15 ft. in the main lake early and late. Blue catfish good on shad below the dam. White bass and crappie fair on jigs below the dam. Sooner: White bass and striped bass hybrids fair on live shad and cut shad. Catfish fair on cut baits and live baits off points and channels. Report submitted by Doug Gottschalk, game warden stationed in Noble County.

Webbers Falls: Elevation 2 ft. above normal, water murky. Largemouth bass fair on crankbaits and stinkbaits in riprap, creek channels and weed beds. Channel catfish being caught drifting cut bait, live bait, sunfish and stinkbaits. Crappie fair on minnows and jigs under bridges. SOUTHEAST

Arbuckle: Elevation 2 ft. below normal, water 81 degrees and stained. Crappie slow. White bass surfacing in mid-lake area. Channel catfish good on baited holes. Bass slow to fair early morning, good on topwater lures and fair on Carolina-rigged brush hogs. Sunfish excellent. Report submitted by Jack Melton.

Blue River: Elevation normal, water 79 degrees and clear. Bass fair on minnows, flies and plastics. Catfish good on liver and worms. Report submitted by Charles Baker, technician at the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area.

Broken Bow: Elevation normal, water clear. Bass being caught while schooling topwater early and late in mouths of creeks and back water. Crappie good on minnows and jigs around structure and baited holes. Walleye fair on deep-running crawdad colored crankbaits around islands, points and rocky outcroppings following the moon phase. Eufaula: Elevation normal, water clear. Largemouth bass fair on plastic baits and crankbaits in deep points. White bass slow. Blue catfish fair on fresh shad drifting the flats. Crappie fair on minnows and jigs at 10 to 20 ft. under bridges and brush piles. Report submitted by Ed Rodebush, game warden stationed in McIntosh County.

Hugo: Elevation normal and slowly rising, water 85 degrees. Largemouth bass fair on minnows around brush piles. Catfish fair on trotlines. Blue catfish good on shad below the dam. Crappie fair on minnows around brush piles. Report submitted by Jay Harvey, game warden stationed in Choctaw and Bryan counties.

Konawa: Elevation 1⁄2 ft. above normal, water 84 degrees and clear. Largemouth bass good on topwater lures and crankbaits at 5 to 10 ft. in schooling bass early and late. Channel catfish good on chicken liver at 10 to 12 ft. around points. Report submitted by Daryl Howser, game warden stationed in Seminole County.

Lower Mountain Fork River: Trout good on Hex hatch. Report submitted by Beavers Bend Fly Shop.

McGee Creek: Elevation 13⁄4 ft. above normal, water 84 degrees and clear. Largemouth bass fair on plastic craws and crawfish colored crankbaits at 6 to 18 ft. along rocky points and on top water lures early and late. Report submitted by Larry Luman, game warden stationed in Atoka County.

Murray: Elevation slightly below normal, water clear. Bass, smallmouth bass, white bass and walleye good at night. Sunfish being caught early and late. All fishing has slowed due to the heat. Report submitted by Jeremy Brothers, game warden stationed in Carter County.

Pine Creek: Elevation above normal, water murky. Crappie fair on minnows and tube jigs. Bass good on topwater lures in the late evening and early morning. Catfish are good on cut hot dogs and cut shad. White bass fair on topwater lures in the late evening. Report Submitted by Mark Hannah, game warden stationed in McCurtain County.

Robert S. Kerr: Elevation normal, water 77 degrees and murky. Largemouth bass fair on plastic baits at 5 to 6 ft. around the weeds and stumps and crankbaits fishing the rocky areas. Crappie fair on minnows at 8 ft. in the old creek channels with submerged brush. White bass slow on jigs at 10 ft. below Webbers Falls dam. Flathead and blue catfish good on fresh cut shad and live bait at 10 to 20 ft. drift fishing and with juglines on the upper part of the lake. Sardis Lake: Bass good to fair on plastics around points and creek channels and around cover on spinnerbaits. Crappie good on minnows off of Jack Fork Bridge and off of the tower. Flathead catfish slow on juglines or trotlines with live bait. Blue and channel catfish good on juglines and trotlines with cut bait and shrimp. White bass good trolling around islands and on plugs and when found surfacing. Report submitted by Dru Polk, game warden stationed in McCurtain County.

Texoma: Elevation 2 ft. below normal, water 84 degrees and clear. Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass fair to good on plastic baits in the creek channels. Striped and white bass fair to good on live bait, slabs and surface lures from the railroad bridge south. Channel and blue catfish fair to good on cut bait, live bait and worms from the Hwy. 70 bridge north. Crappie fair on minnows in Little Glasses creek. Sunfish good on worms around the riprap. Wister: Elevation 2 ft. above normal and murky. Largemouth bass good on topwater lures and buzzbaits early and late. Crappie slow on small spinnerbaits and jigs. Channel catfish fair to slow on cut shad and liver with jugs. Report submitted by Randy Fennell, game warden stationed in LeFlore County.

SOUTHWEST

Altus-Lugert: Elevation 151⁄2 ft. below normal. Fishing is best in the deeper waters; though a little slower than last week. Walleye fair to good biting on minnows in deep water. Striped bass hybrids and white bass fair to good on minnows in deep water. Crappie fair to good. Report submitted by Sue Hokanson, Quartz Mountain State Park.

Ellsworth: Elevation below normal and murky. Catfish fair on juglines. Report submitted by Mike Carroll, game warden stationed in Comanche County.

Foss: Elevation normal, water 80 degrees. Walleye fair with live bait. Striped bass hybrids fair with slabs. Catfish good on cut bait. Crappie fair. Report submitted by Eric Puyear, B & K Bait House.
