Freshman reserve Whitney Watts had a hat trick while Candace Baird also scored once as the East Central University soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit and secured its first victory of the season Friday with a 4-1 decision over host University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
After the host Lady Drovers had taken a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of the contest on an Alex Cernigliaro unassisted goal, ECU tied it up in the 20th minute as Watts had an unassisted score.
That 1-1 deadlock stood up through the rest of the half and deep into the second half before Watts scored again off a Shannon McKim assist in the 71st minute. Then less than a minute later, Baird made it 3-1 off a Sydney Kromer feed.
The Lady Tigers wrapped up the scoring with Watts’ third goal, an unassisted effort in the 87th minute.
ECU goalkeeper Christie Sarginson was credited with four saves before being injured and replaced by Kelly Davis as ECU held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. USAO had a 14-12 edge in overall shots as Destiny Rachal recorded five saves for USAO.
The Lady Tigers, 1-2 on the season, finally open the home portion of their 2008 schedule today by entertaining St. Mary’s University (Texas) at 2 p.m.
