Volleyball squad drops two of first three duals

Austin, Texas The East Central University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Emporia State Saturday in its third match of the season and in the history of the young program at the St. Edward’s University Tournament.

ECU, which fell to 1-2 heading into a late Saturday afternoon match with Nebraska-Omaha, saw Emporia State, behind Megan Koster’s 11 kills and 13 digs, defeat the Lady Tigers, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18.

For ECU, Holly Hicks registered 11 assists, five kills and three digs. Emily Holombek led the Lady Tigers with six kills to go along with five digs.

The meeting with Nebraska-Omaha will be the fourth and final dual of the SEU Tournament.

ECU opens its home schedule Tuesday against Arkansas Tech at 4 p.m. and St. Gregory’s at 8 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center. ATU and SGU will do battle at 6 p.m. in the three-way affair.



Lady Tigers go 1-1 in debut

AUSTIN, Texas — Junior setter Holly Hicks posted the first triple-double in school history Friday as East Central University beat host St. Edward’s 3-1 to wrap up the first day of volleyball play at the SEU Tournament.

Hicks, out of Round Rock, Texas, posted 14 kills in 25 attack attempts to go along with 38 assists, 17 digs, three aces and two blocks as ECU, competing in its first season of volleyball, earned its first win, moving to 1-1 on the season.

Earlier in the day, ECU dropped a 3-1 dual to Southern Arkansas in its first-ever appearance on the court.

ECU 3, St. Edwards 1

The Lady Tigers opened play with a 25-18 game one victory before dropping a slim 25-23 decision in the second game. However, ECU rolled to identical 25-13 wins in games three and four for the dual victory.

Two more ECU players posted double-doubles as Katy Fields collected 12 kills and 18 digs while Jacqueline Sparks compiled 12 kills and 16 digs.

Also for the Lady Tigers, Emily Holombek barely missed a double-double after getting nine kills, 11 digs and one block. Chelsea Whitmire contributed five kills and three blocks.

Southern Arkansas 3, ECU 1

ECU opened a new era in athletics as its first volleyball team, despite claiming a 25-14 decision in the first game, dropped the next three games as Southern Arkansas claimed the 3-1 victory.

SAU won the next three games by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-22.

The Lady Tigers received 12 kills and 13 digs out of Sparks while Hicks registered 29 assists in the Lady Tigers’ debut.

Megan Kimak was also credited with 13 digs for ECU.

The Lady Tigers open the home portion of their intial schedule Tuesday, hosting Arkansas Tech at 4 p.m. and St. Gregory’s at 8 p.m. inside the Kerr Center.
