ECU Tigers' soccer loses one, wins one

West Texas A&M shuts out ECU in women’s soccer, 3-0

ADA—East Central University closed out the 2009 women’s soccer season Sunday with a 3-0 loss to West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference play.

WTAMU, which improved to 13-2-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the LSC, took a 1-0 lead on an own goal by the Lady Tigers in the 24th minute.

The Buffs then took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Melanie Swanson, off a short Miriam Dominguez cross, in the 47th minute and then Becky Hewson scored her seventh goal of the season, which was unassisted, in the 73rd minute to close out the scoring.

ECU goalkeeper Natalie Wilson was credited with eight saves in the loss.

The Lady Tigers, who concluded the season at 6-8-2 and 3-7-0, were unable to fire off any shots in the first half, but compiled seven in the second, including three on goal. WTAMU had 17 total shots with 11 on goal.

The match marked the career finale for eight seniors – Jordan Antonisse, Candace Baird, Rebekah Jackson, Shannon McKim, Lisa McMenamy, Caitlin Reilly, Christie Sarginson and Kayla Woolery.

ECU soccer squad knocks off Eastern New Mexico, 3-2

ADA — Sophomore forward Whitney Watts scored her team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season, including the game-winner at 69:28, as East Central University knocked off Eastern New Mexico 3-2 Friday in a Lone Star Conference soccer match at Lady Tiger Field.

The Lady Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 6-7-2 overall and 3-6 in the LSC, took a 1-0 advantage just 15 seconds into the match. ECU took the opening kickoff as Sydney Kromer, playing on the right wing, crossed the ball to Ashleigh Peete, who tapped the ball over the goalkeeper’s head. It was the first goal of the season for Peete, who plays the sweeper spot for the Lady Tigers and the third assist for Kromer.

ENMU, which fell to 8-10 and 3-6, scored the next two goals in cruising to a 2-1 halftime advantage. Jordan Sjue scored an unassisted goal on a shot from 25 yards out at 9:07 and then Brook Serrano scored off a cross from the right wing by Danielle Thurman.

ECU quickly tied the match at the outset of the second half as Watts scored off a through ball from Candace Baird at 46:27 and then reserve Jordan Wozniak delivered a through ball to Watts for the winning score, which came with just over 20 minutes to go.

It was Baird’s second assist of the season and the first for Wozniak.

The Zias out-shot the Lady Tigers 18-5 and had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Lady Tiger goalkeeper Natalie Wilson was credited with seven saves while ENMU goalie Sierra Cardenas recorded two for ENMU.
