NOTEWORTHY: Tupelo shot just 26 percent from the field and hit only 5-of-16 free throw attempts and fell to Wapanucka in Bill Godwin’s first game as head coach. Jennifer Martin scored 17 points to lead all scorers for Wapanucka, and Shanna Davidson was in double figures for Tupelo with 13 points. The Lady Tigers forced 14 turnovers and had just six of their own, but they managed just one basket off a turnover in the game.

COACHES QUOTE: “It’s tough to win when you shoot 26 percent. We played hard but 26 percent from the floor and 5-for-16 from the free throw line pretty much tells the story. We’ll be okay, though.” — Tupelo coach Bill Godwin.

NOTEWORTHY: Earlsboro hit six 3-pointers and started the game on a 15-6 surge and outlasted Stonewall in the season opener for both teams. Megan Maloy paced Earlsboro with 20 points while Mindy Holland scored 14 for the Lady Longhorns and Tyla Transue followed with 13.

COACHES QUOTE: “We didn’t play good, but they shot the lights out. Earlsboro was better than us last night. We have a long way to go. Defensivley, we’re not very good. We have to get better, or it’s going to be a long season,” — Stonewall head coach Christie Jennings.

NOTEWORTHY: Jeremy Stein scored a career-high 20 points and added 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, and Trevor Walkup also had a career-high 14 points to lead Tupelo to the season-opening victory. Stein scored 15 points in the second half after the Tigers led just 16-15 at the break, and sophomores Jake Sanders and Kade Curry both had solid games defensively, with Sanders grabbing three steals and Curry pulling down four rebounds and drawing two charging fouls off the bench.

COACHES QUOTE: “It’s nice to get off a winning note at home. Jeremy really stepped up in the second half and made some big plays for us. We did a good job defensively in the fourth quarter and did a better job of managing the game.” — Tupelo coach Clay Weller.

NOTEWORTHY: Stonewall led Earlsboro (No. 5 in Class B) by two points at the break but couldn’t contain the hosts’ running game in the second half. Patrick Bryan led Earlsboro with 22 points, while junior Josh Scribner scored a game and career-high 25 points for Stonewall. Logan Reed, playing his first varsity basketball game for the Longhorns, had 13 points and David Hamilton added 12 in the loss. Stonewall committed 17 turnovers and surrendered 20 offensive rebounds.

COACHES QUOTE: “We played really the first half and the second half we couldn’t control the tempo. They sped it up and we couldn’t play at that speed. I was proud of our effort. They’re a good ballclub.” — Stonewall coach Wes Moreland.
