ECU men fall in final exhibition

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – East Central placed four players in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as NCAA Division I Texas San-Antonio received a combined nine 3-pointers from its top two scorers and held a 52-25 rebounding advantage to beat the Tigers 103-80 Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in ECU’s final exhibition.

The Tigers, who officially launch the 2009-10 season next Tuesday at Dallas Baptist, received 17 points apiece from Eric Allen and Denarius Darby, along with 16 from Wes Badley.

Allen canned 7-of-12 shots from the floor and was 3-of-6 from 3-point range while Darby was 6-of-13, including three 3-pointers. Badley was a near-perfect 7-of-8 from the field as ECU shot 48.4 percent for the game.

UTSA, coming off a season-opening victory at Iowa on Sunday, received a game-high 24 points from Devin Gibson, who was 6-of-9 from the floor, 4-of-5 from 3-point land and 8-8 from the line. He also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Melvin Johnson III followed with 19 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, for the Roadrunners. Terry Fields (13 points), Morris Smith IV (11) and Omar Johnson (11) also got to double figures for the winners, who shot 48.5 percent overall and 42.9 from long range.

Also hitting the double-digit plateau for ECU was Wayne Andrews with 12 to go with a team-leading three steals. Maurice Abraham chipped in nine points before fouling out.

Darren Avery, playing in his first exhibition for the Tigers other than the alumni game, handed out a team-leading four assists and had a pair of steals to go with his three points.

The Roadrunners had 20 rebounds on the offensive end as they outscored ECU 18-8 in second-chance points. ECU had four less turnovers than UTSA (19-15).

The Tigers trailed 41-34 at the half and were outscored by 16 in the second half.

ECU’s game at Dallas Baptist on Tuesday will tip off at 7 p.m. The Tigers then visit Rhema Bible on Dec. 1, before making a two-game Lone Star Conference crossover swing at West Texas A&M on Dec. 3 and Eastern New Mexico on Dec. 5, before finally opening the home portion of their schedule on Dec. 8 against Dallas Baptist.
