TOMMY NEMECEK

SLAUGHTERVILLE — Services for Thomas “Tommy” Vanderbilt Nemecek, 90, Slaughterville, are 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Memorial Chapel Funeral Service, Noble. Lonnie Hutton of Prague Church of Christ will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at Noble IOOF Cemetery.

Mr. Nemecek died Wednesday, May 20, at Prague. A lifelong resident of Cleveland County, Nemecek was born April 9, 1919, to George Elmer and Ella Bain Nemecek near Lexington.

He was raised just north of Slaughterville,, attended Alamo School and then Noble High, and later began his family in Norman before moving to his current home in 1962.

Nemecek won three bronze stars as a veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the 10th Armored Division, 420th Armored Field Artillery of Gen. George Patton’s Third Army. His 105mm self-propelled howitzer crew was all but wiped out in fierce fighting during the Battle of the Bulge, one of the famous units who pulled up, turned and attacked in blizzard conditions to relieve Bastogne and break up the surprise Nazi advance. He received a Purple Heart for injuries there on Dec. 22, 1944.

After the war, he returned to work staking the earliest lines for the new Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, where he later became warehouse manager and purchasing agent, retiring in 1984 after 38 years. He then joined RSVP and volunteered serving in the lunch program at the Noble Senior Citizens Center from 1986-96.

He was a longtime member of Noble United Methodist Church, was a lifelong Democrat, and a member of the Communication Workers of America.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Conna, of Ada, Larry and Janet of Burbank, Calif., and Gary and Terri of Oklahoma City; a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie Morton and Afton of Choctaw; and brother and sister-in-law, Wyman and Helen of Grand Island, Neb.; his former wife, Oleta Titus of Troy, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson; 10 nieces and nine nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his four older brothers and two sisters, Elmer, Albert, Johnnie, Levi, and Dorothy Jordan and Katherine Robinett.

Bearers are nephews Ron Nemecek, Von Nemecek, Wyman Nemecek, Gordon Nemecek, Scott Nemecek and Bob Nemecek.

Honorary bearers are Scott Sublett, Doyle Davenport, Mike Grayson, Max Meek, Randy Simmons, Jack Ferrell, Bill Ritchie, Jimmie McKenny and Thomas Chambers.

Niece Teresa Morton is providing music.

Visitation is 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Chapel in Noble.

RAVIA — Services for Linda Mae Cheek McSwain, 70, Ravia, were 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Jon Smith officiating. Burial followed at Ravia Cemetery.

Mrs. McSwain died Wednesday, May 20, at Ada. She was born Dec. 16, 1938, at Ada to Lonnie P. Cheek and Blanche Allen Cheek.

She graduated from Latta High School and worked as a seamstress for sewing factories in Tishomingo and Madill. At one time she was city clerk for the town of Ravia. She was selected as an honorary member of Ravia Fire Department. Before her retirement she had office manager at Sooner Trading Company for more than 18 years.

She married Maynard R. "Sockey" McSwain April 17, 1961, at Gainesville, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March 9, 1981; a daughter, LuAnna Lynn McSwain; a sister, Betty; two brothers, A.M. and R.V.; and an infant brother.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Freddy Hopper, Ada; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Suzette McSwain and Terry and Nancy McSwain, all of Ravia; a sister, Anna Belle Watkins, Bristow; a brother, Frank Cheek, Roberta, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bearers were Doddie Nanney, Mac McCutcheon, Randy Bevill, Monty Latshaw, Joe Heath and Joe Elrod. Honorary bearers were Bud Woods, Jeff Earles, Doris Pennington and members of Ravia Fire Department.

PRESTON PERDUE

NORMAN — Services for Preston Eugene Perdue, 76, Norman, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Pickard Funeral Home Chapel, Stratford. Burial with Army military honors will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Ada.

Mr. Perdue died May 19, 2009, at his home in Norman. He was born July 31, 1932, at Wichita, Kan., to Johnny H. and Edna Sager Perdue.

Mr. Perdue grew up in Wichita, Kan., Beaver County, Oklahoma, and Nederland, Texas, before moving to the Stratford, Vanoss and Ada areas. He graduated from Vanoss High School in May 1951. After attending Murray State College in Tishomingo and serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Perdue graduated from the University of Houston. He was a certified public accountant for the FBI. His working career also included JC Penney Company, Celanese Corporation and owner of a jewelry store.

He married Nancy Bryan of Stratford on Aug. 17, 1951.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Chester Betts, Ernest Betts, Arthur Betts, Elmer Perdue and Hubert Betts; sisters, Norma Betts, Betty Housby and Jewell Campbell; two brothers-in-law, John L. Davis, Beaumont, Texas, and Oscar Folsom, Norman; two sisters-in-law, Ann Davis and Mary Monds, Beaumont, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy, of the home; a son, Preston Bryan Perdue, Hawaii; daughter, Laura Faith Headley and husband, Ray Headley and grandson, Matthew of Prague; granddaughter, Melissa McHugh of Denton, Texas; a sister, Ruby Alfaro and husband Bernie of Wichita, Kan.; four sisters-in-law, Faith Forsey and husband, Frank Forsey of Highland, Calif., Laura Folsom of Norman, Velma Perdue of Haddenfield, N.J., and Fern Betts, Wichita, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.
