Sounding Board, July 6, 2008

“When I read the Ada Evening News of Sunday, June 22, 2008 in regard to the “Social Host Ordinance” designed to better handle underage drinking, I was reminded of back in Nov. 7, 2000, we brought “liquor by the drink” for a vote and it passed. Our church members had signed a petition to prevent this, but that didn’t seem to help.

I felt that this would eventually happen. When the “underage” see their parents drinking, why wouldn’t it be OK for them to do so also? You can read in the “police records” that most of the arrests are for public intoxication. Drinking alcoholic beverages is so “available” now, why shouldn’t anyone, whether underage or older, help themselves to getting intoxicated and getting behind the wheel and killing others on the street?

I will say: “We Adans asked for it,” so now all we can do is pray that our loved ones are not in harm’s way. Does anyone have a guilty conscious for voting ‘yes’?”

“People should know that one of McCain’s main advisors is former senator Phil Gramm of Texas. He wrote the legislation that he regulated called ‘The Enron Loop Hole.’ It allows the current speculation to go on that is running up the price of oil. Look at McCain, then look at his friends.”

“The new ordinance they passed on the underage drinking is not going to detour the drinking, it is just going make it to where they have to collect more money from the parents or to the person who’s drinking. This isn’t going to help a bit.”

“I’m sitting here at the light on Broadway and oh by Nichols and the agri-plex and I can’t understand why it takes so long to go straight across. I’m behind about 10 cars and only about two cars got to go. I wish something could be done about this.”

With the upcoming 4th of July I’d like to quote a statement made by President Ronald Reagan Aug. 23, 1984. “Without God there is no virtue because there is no prompting of the conscience, without God there is a coursing of the society, without God democracy will not, and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we are one nation under God then we will be a nation gone under.”
