Letter to the Editor for August 20, 2008

Dear Editor,

I have lived most of my adult life in Ada. My husband and I decided to move back to this community to raise our children here. We think Ada is a wonderful place.

However, every evening when I sit down to look through the Ada Evening News I am baffled by the stories that are always placed on the front page.

A quick glance at page one of our local newspaper would lead some to believe that we are a community of child abusers, murders, and pornography dealers.

Is this the image we want to portray of our town?

I realize that crime is a reality in any society and that we must unfortunately hear about it. But, is it necessary to glorify it on the front page of the paper?

I know there are other stories that can be highlighted.

In Friday’s (Aug. 8) paper there was an interesting story about a local church celebrating 50 years in our community (page 4).

Another story (on page 5) listed some outstanding reports on our local schools.

And, one can always find interesting news about local athletes, students, and professionals scattered throughout the paper.

Aren’t these the kind of stories that deserve front page attention-stories about people in our community trying to make a difference and make the world a better place?

Instead, in Friday’s (Aug. 8) paper, the front page included news of a local man making child porn, another article about a couple abusing young children, and lastly, an article about bail for an alleged local murderer.

Does it have to be this way? Can’t the Ada Evening News be a reflection of the great community that Ada truly is?
