Charges filed in shooting case

By Barry Porterfield

The gunshots that rang out during Halloween weekend in Pauls Valley were real, but no injuries were reported.

One of four subjects arrested faces criminal charges. Two juveniles and two adults were taken into police custody on Oct. 31.

Derrick Lewis Lane, 19, is charged with two felony shooting offenses, in addition to a couple of other formal allegations related to thefts before the Saturday night gun incident.

It all came down around 6:30 p.m. when local police, county deputies and state troopers responded to the call of multiple shots being fired in the 100 block of East Jefferson.

Witnesses are reported to have told authorities Lane was initially involved in an argument with an unnamed juvenile.

After a second juvenile reportedly got involved in the dispute, Lane is believed to have gone into his nearby house, where he retrieved a gun. Once outside Lane is alleged to have fired an undetermined number of shots.

A filed affidavit indicates Lane claimed to have fired the shots into the air simply as a way of protecting his family.

Later arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of drug paraphernalia possession was Christopher Gilley, 24.

Police reports show Gilley, who is one of the residents of the house on Jefferson street, later told local police he also retrieved a gun and fired one shot into the air.

One of the two arrested juveniles is also believed to have fired gun shots during the exchange.

Lane was charged Monday with felony counts of shooting with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon in Garvin County District Court.

After the incident, a search of Gilley’s residence resulted in officers finding a small amount of marijuana and some rolling papers, considered to be paraphernalia.

Also arrested on public intoxication complaints were the two unnamed juveniles involved in the dispute with Lane.

The shooting-related charges were not alone for Lane on Monday as he also received two counts of second-degree burglary. One is related to a break-in at a store in the 800 block of South Walnut on Friday. Lane is also accused of stealing audio stereo equipment from a vehicle a day later in the 200 block of Jefferson.
