CALVIN — Scholarships for 2009 were presented by the Calvin Alumni Foundation for Education on Sunday, March 29 at Calvin High School. The foundation was founded in 2006 and at this time is presenting two full scholarships and two monetary scholarships.
The Lou and Roy Oliver Scholarship provides books and tuition each semester as long as the student maintains a 3.0 grade average throughout his/her college career. This scholarship memorializes Lou and Roy Oliver, long time residents and business owners in the Calvin area. This year’s recipient is Neal Hassler and is provided by Roy Oliver Jr.
The Wandine and Leon Russell Scholarship also provides a student’s books and tuition for each semester of college when the student sustains a 3.0 grade average. Their son, Alan, of Waco, Texas, provided the Russell scholarship to honor Wandine and Leon Russell for their service and dedication to public schools in Gerty and Calvin. Senior Lacie Holman has been awarded this scholarship beginning in the fall of 2009.
Totaling $700, the Mary and Doyle Blaylock and W.W. Graham Scholarships were granted to Jesse Beasley, valedictorian of the 2009 graduating class. She will be attending East Central University in the fall.
Salutatorian, Heather Jones, was presented the Janie and Gordon Derrick Scholarship by their grandsons, Duane, Keith, and Greg Murray. The Derrick’s farm was located east of Calvin in the Hill Top Community. The Derricks were positive role models for anyone who came in contact with them. Miss Jones will be attending the Pontotoc Technology Center and will be awarded $1,000 per semester.
In memory of Paula Lindley Sharp, Gary and Kala Sharp, Deloris Lindley, and OneOk Energy contributed to the foundation.
