GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Village mayoral incumbent Dave Nelson retained his seat in the mayor’s office Tuesday, winning over former mayor Frances Cervas by 42 votes.
Nelson won over Cervas 182-140, according to unofficial Ashtabula County Board of Elections results.
“We were fortunate here in the village to have two very qualified candidates for mayor,” Councilman Donald Woodward said. “Both Dave and Fran have the experience and the drive to take the village to the next level.”
This is Nelson’s first campaign victory as mayor and also his first victory over Cervas, who won the mayor’s seat over Nelson by just seven votes two years ago. Cervas relinquished the mayor’s office after nine months in office, and Nelson was appointed as her replacement.
The mayor’s race was the main event in the election for the village.
All four Village Council candidates won seats: Steve Cervas, P.J. Macchia and Donald Woodward retained their positions, and Dana Pinkert steps into retiring Councilwoman Wilma Reppert’s seat. Steve Cervas took 178 votes (25 percent), Macchia 158 votes (22 percent), Pinkert 178 votes (25 percent), and Woodward 202 votes (28 percent).
A former councilman, Nelson was no stranger to local government when he took over as mayor in October 2008. Nelson said the village staff made the transition easily but the village has faced many challenges since he took the position.
“I see so much unrealized potential for the village,” he said. “We have the greatest natural resource in Ohio, right here, in Lake Erie.”
Nelson said he will work to establish a public beach in the village, as well as a skateboard park.
