The Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic is always a special way to end the volleyball season in the area, traditionally one of the most productive sports played in this vicinity.
But this year has been a particularly special one for area volleyball teams, so it is fitting that the 21st edition of the Classic is completing the season. That event will take place today at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeside High School.
Twenty-nine seniors from the 11 schools in the Star Beacon coverage area will participate. Each of those schools will have at least one player in the match, which will be a best-of-five event as per normal high school rules.
Admission to the match is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students. No passes will be honored.
Fifteen girls will be a part of the Lightning team coached by Annah Haeseler of Geneva and Stacy Sepelak of Riverside. The remaining 14 girls will comprise the Thunder team coached by Conneaut’s Paula Ghiz and Lakeside’s Lisa Newsome.
Sepelak’s Riverside squad had a season of historic proportions, setting a school record for victories, becoming the first team at any level to reach the regional-championship match since Jefferson did so in 2005 and the first big school to get to that point since the 1986 Geneva squad coached by now-retired Stan Bielech. The Beavers broke the 21-year run of Division I district championships held by Mentor this year at Euclid.
Two of Sepelak’s Riverside seniors, outside hitters Jayne Nagy and Teresa Noewer, will be a part of her team today, while outside hitter Erika West will be on the Thunder squad. Libero Allyson Clifford was also scheduled to play for the Thunder, but was injured in the regional-championship match.
Haeseler’s Geneva squad also had a big season, reaching the Division II district-championship match for the first time since she took over as head coach in 2001. She will have libero Kristyn Pristov and outside-middle hitter Taylor Webb on her team, while outside hitter Hillary Hambleton, libero Aimee Jones and outside hitter Rachel Murray will be on the Thunder.
Edgewood also enjoyed a big season by reaching the Division II district semifinals. Middle hitter Laura Coxe and outside hitter Courtney Wentworth will be on the Thunder squad.
SS. John and Paul also returned to form by reaching the Division IV district semifinals. Setter Kristina Krumins will play for the Lightning, while outside hitter Carly Penna will be on the Thunder.
Conneaut enjoyed a second straight productive year for Ghiz, who has led the Spartans to 29 victories in the past two seasons. She will be joined on the Thunder by middle hitter Nichele Johnson and setter Kelsey Prevot, while outside hitters Sarah Campbell and Justine VanCise will be on the Lightning.
Pymatuning Valley enjoyed a second straight solid season for coach Rob Wludyga. The Lakers will be represented by sisters Brittany Jock, a defensive specialist, and Courtney Jock, a setter, to the Thunder squad.
Three Jefferson seniors will be on the Lightning squad. Outside hitters Hailey Burns and Joslin Landis and middle hitter Lizzy Ziemski will represent the Falcons.
Newsome will be working with three of her Lakeside players for the last time. They are defensive specialist Taylor Atzemis, libero Angela DeGeorge and outside hitter Dianna Moore.
Madison will have two seniors on the Lightning. They are outside hitter Juliana Brotzman and defensive specialist Sheryl Powell.
