Monroe trustees will meet to oppose injection well

MONROE TOWNSHIP — Trustees in Monroe Township will hold a special meeting Saturday morning to draft a letter opposing a proposed salt-water injection well, said Trustee Charles Riley.
The public meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the township garage, 5578 Monroe Center Road.
Kastle Resources Enterprises of Wooster is seeking permission to create a brine injection well on a small parcel of land on the north side of Hilldom Road, a short distance west of Middle Road. Kastle is making application to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which has jurisdiction in such matters.
A special meeting is needed because trustees only recently learned they have a very small time frame to formally oppose the application, Riley said.
Trustees do not want the well because they fear trucks entering and leaving the site will cause severe road damage, Riley said. There is also a belief that injection wells can cause seismic activity, he said.
The well would be 6,500 feet deep and require more than 8,000 feet of casing, according to the application. Kastle is seeking permission to pump an unlimited amount of brine into the well, according to the application.
Monroe has two brine injection wells already in place, but they are much shallower than the proposed well, Riley said. If the application is approved, drilling could commence “within 30 days,” he said.
Riley is trying to secure support for the trustees’ stance from Ashtabula County commissioners, state representatives and leaders in neighboring Conneaut and Pennsylvania townships.
