SB delivery woman finds injured man

GENEVA —Kelly Hemminger was going about the start of a normal day Saturday morning when she noticed something not quite so ordinary.
Hemminger, who was getting ready to deliver Star Beacon newspapers to subscribers at 4:30 a.m., saw a man lying in the roadway, his pants and jacket torn and his shoes missing, her future father-in-law Jeffrey Dickenson said.
“She saw him laying in the road, but she was afraid to stop because it was dark,” Dickenson said. “So she had me call for help from my house.”
William McCauley, 30, was walking on Austin Road Saturday morning when he said he was hit by a white truck or sport utility vehicle, Geneva police reports show.
Dickenson found McCauley while on his rounds and called the Ashtabula County sheriff’s department for help.
McCauley, who suffered only minor cuts and scrapes, said he is resting at home after treatment at UH-Geneva Medical Center.
McCauley said his 4:30 a.m. walk is normal for him.
“I was walking along and I saw headlights and I tried to jump out of the way,” he said. “I don’t know if the driver even knew he hit me.”
The case was turned over to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Geneva police reports show.
OHP Lt. Mike Harmon said the case is still under investigation.
“We are not sure (McCauley’s) story is correct,” Harmon said. “His injuries are not conducive with being struck by a car.”
Geneva officers noted the absence of tire marks on the grass or dirt at the scene of the accident, police reports show.
