Report: Trooper attacked baseball coach?

By Cass Rains
ENID NEWS AND EAGLE (ENID, Okla.)

ENID, Okla. An Enid baseball coach contends he was grabbed and pushed by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper upset over the coach’s decision not to place his son on a summer league team.

According to an Enid Police Department report, Trooper Kevin Bradshaw of Yukon, whose name was marked out on the report because no arrest has been made and no charges filed, grabbed AAA American Legion coach Scott Baugh around the neck and pushed him into a hitting net.

An officer spoke with Majors American Legion coach Bill Mayberry, who said there was an altercation between a coach and a parent. He was standing with Bradshaw and said Bradshaw was involved, according to the report.

Police asked Bradshaw what happened, and he said he arrived to speak with the coach and they had an argument that became heated and “that was all he had to say,” the report states.

Baugh told police he explained why Bradshaw’s son would not be on the team and why, according to the report. Baugh said he stood to leave, and Bradshaw began arguing about his son not being on the team.

Baugh said as he was walking from the office Bradshaw followed, still arguing with him. Baugh said it appeared Bradshaw “snapped” and grabbed him around the neck with both hands and pushed him into a hitting net, according to the report.

Baugh said he left the building and walked into the view of others outside and told Bradshaw, “Push me now,” the report states. Mayberry then separated the two men. Mayberry told police the only thing he heard was Baugh saying something to the effect of “put your hands on me now” and possibly a profanity.

When police asked Bradshaw if the incident occurred, he “shrugged his shoulders while tilting his head to the side, frowning and rolling his eyes,” the report states. Bradshaw said he was not going to make a statement.

According to the report, investigating officers told Bradshaw the coach said he did not want to be contacted and had made his decision and “said all he needs to say.” Bradshaw told the officer he already said what he came to say and refused to talk about the incident, but he did offer to provide any personal information needed for the police report.

Mayberry told police he did not want Bradshaw banned from the playing field.

OHP spokesman Capt. Chris West said OHP officials were aware of the incident involving Bradshaw, but no disciplinary action has been taken.
