Store clerks attacked, beaten

Juvenile suspect in custody

Two clerks at a White Springs convenience store were attacked and beaten around 9:10 p.m., Tuesday, August 12, White Springs Police Chief Ken Brookins said Wednesday. A 17-year-old juvenile has been charged in the attacks, Brookins said.

During a 911 call, a clerk at the S & S Convenience Store on south US 41 reported that her co-worker who was behind the counter had been shot and that the attacker was attempting to gain access to the storeroom where she was, say authorities. The clerk was able to give a brief description of the attacker before losing contact with the 911 dispatcher.

Upon arrival, officers discovered one clerk in the front of the store and another in the stockroom, said Brookins. Both clerks had sustained injuries to the face and head, he said, though the injuries appeared to have been caused by blunt force trauma rather than gunshots.

Brookins said both victims have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home. No money was taken in the incident, Brookins said.

"There was great cooperation from all law enforcement agencies," said Brookins. "At this time, we believe (the suspect) acted alone."

The suspect is currently being held in the Hamilton County Jail.
