Published November 07, 2009 01:15 am - The Salvation Army's red kettles visually remind us that it is the Christmas season, a season when the spirit of giving and concern for our fellow men, women, boys and girls seems to possess us all. Ring a bell

The Salvation Army's red kettles visually remind us that it is the Christmas season, a season when the spirit of giving and concern for our fellow men, women, boys and girls seems to possess us all. What better way to heed that spirit than to drop bills or coins in the red kettles while hearing the joyful ringing of the bells by a caring volunteer.

You know that your money will be well used by the Salvation Army to bring a touch of joy and peace to many lives that are beset by misfortune.

There are so many in Cleveland County now that need a helping hand because of the recession or because of physical or other problems. The number of applications for Christmas aid already has overwhelmed the Army's ability to provide. These are troubled times and the need is greater than ever.

Many face a Christmas without a job or income and with a family to care for. Some are the wives and children of soldiers who are away serving our country. Children wonder where the joy of Christmas is as they face a bleak future. But the good people of Cleveland County always have the answer as the more fortunate share with the less fortunate and give of their means through the red kettles.

The Salvation Army takes those gifts and brings some happiness and hope to those who have neither. It is not only the food, clothes and toys, but the sense that others care which brings light into lives that are dark with worry and want.

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to ring the bells at the kettles. You are a good candidate. Encourage your children and grandchildren to ring with you. Offer one or more hours of your time and you will be rewarded with a sense of satisfaction that comes from helping others.

The kettles will be out Nov. 27 through Dec. 24. In Norman, they will be at: The Cellar, 555 W. Main St.; Dillards west door, 3499 W. Main St.; Hobby Lobby, 2417 W. Main St.; Sam's Club, 3400 W. Main St.; The Spirit Shop, Main Street and Berry Avenue; Walmart East, 601 12th Ave. NE; and Walmart West, 333 Interstate Drive.

Oklahoma University campus locations are: Bizzell Library, Dale Hall, Student Union south door, and Sarkey Building southwest entry.

Moore locations are: JCPenney, Interstate 35 Service Road and Walmart, 501 SW 19th St. A Noble location is at Super C Mart 619 N. Main St.

Choose a location and decide on a time that you would like to ring the bells. Then call 579-5442 to reserve a time and place. Call early to get the best time and location for you.

Remember: Need has no season.
