No climate for a change treaty

    He was speaking of many veterans, when he answered, "We find them in our streets, in the office, the shops and the working places of our country and on the farms.

    They came home without the parades and welcomes given to previous generations. Now, more than 30 years after the last Vietnam veteran returned home, the state is proclaiming 2010 as the Year of the Vietnam Veteran.

    Norman voters have generally supported public safety initiatives. Few could argue against a safe community with solid fire and police protection.
    Voters approved a sales tax a year and a half ago that put more police and firefighters on the payroll and will build new fire stations on the east and west sides of the city.

    State Treasurer Scott Meachum, in Norman this past week to speak to a financial advisers group, said he didn't expect much improvement in October's state tax revenue numbers. He'll get the numbers next week but historically October is a slow month for Oklahoma retailers.

    The Federal Reserve's pledge this week to hold firm on its prime lending rate of between zero and 0.25 percent is further evidence the economy continues to grow, albeit rather slowly.
    Economic activity continues to grow but the tide won't turn until job creation picks up, according to Fed chairman Ben Bernanke.
  • Credit card companies create own problems
    New credit card legislation, partly initiated by a Norman man's tragic experiences with overwhelming debt, passed through Congress this past May. It was supposed to take effect next year.
    But lawmakers said banks were piling on hefty finance charges on consumers in the interim period before the measure takes effect.

    New York Yankee fans paid ticket scalpers $20,000 a seat to watch Game Six Wednesday. The bonus checks cleared. If a bomb had fallen on that stadium every investment banker in New York would have been killed, for the second time in one year.
