Little Miss 4th of July Pageant chosen

Girls from around the county competed Tuesday in the Little Miss Fourth of July pageant, which has become a staple of the Oakboro Fourth of July festivities.

  • Pfeiffer students win Phi Beta Lambda awards
    Several Pfeiffer University students brought home awards during the Annual Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) National Leadership Confer-ence in Anaheim, Calif. June 21-24.
    PBL is a national association of college and university students who are interested in careers in business. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.
  • Ridgecrest School hosted week-long Camp Invention
    Ridgecrest Elementary School hosted Camp Invention, a week-long camp Monday through Friday, for first- to sixth-graders interested in math, science and imaginative activities.
  • Albemarle class celebrates 60th reunion
    The Albemarle High Class of 1949 celebrated its 60th reunion May 15-16. Fifty-eight people attended the events Friday and Saturday nights.
    Friday night there was a social hour at the Holiday Inn Express from 5-9 p.m. There were refreshments of a large variety. It was a time to meet and share with one another. It was a joyous occasion for everyone.
  • United Way prize winner meets Kellie
    Kellie Pickler raffle winner Lynn Shires was absolutely blown away when she realized that she had won second row tickets to the Taylor Swift concert, with Kellie Pickler as the opening act, at the Greensboro Coliseum on June 12.
  • Bojangles to open in Locust in July
    The first week in July is the projected opening date for the Bojangles in Locust.
  •  Miss Stanly, Outstanding Teen head to state pageants
    Hallie Edwards and Nicole Kippes are competing for Miss North Carolina and Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen, respectively, this week.
    The Miss North Carolina Pageant is a state preliminary pageant for the Miss American Pageant.
  •  Cafeteria workers receive 9-month contract
    A relieved group of Stanly County Schools cafeteria workers left a called meeting of the school board on Tuesday night with broad smiles on their faces.
    After considerable discussion, the board unanimously approved Boardmember Tracy Wyrick’s motion to table a vote on awarding a contract to a food service provider for nine months, thus giving the local workers an opportunity to continue the progress they’d shown since February.
  •  Albemarle Optimist Club honors Boy, Girl of the Year
    Each year the county’s high schools nominate a senior boy and girl to be recognized, honored and presented a plaque by the Albemarle Optimist Club for their outstanding achievements.
  • North grads told to ‘treasure every moment’
    “Treasure every moment because yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
    Those were Superintendent Dr. Samuel DePaul’s closing remarks to North Stanly High School’s Class of 2009 Friday.
