The Albemarle High Class of 1949 celebrated its 60th reunion May 15-16. Fifty-eight people attended the events Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday night there was a social hour at the Holiday Inn Express from 5-9 p.m. There were refreshments of a large variety. It was a time to meet and share with one another. It was a joyous occasion for everyone.
Polly Talbert had organized and prepared old and family pictures sent ahead of time by class members for display. This was most interesting to everyone.
Saturday night the reunion dinner was held in the Magnolia Room of the Stanly Regional Medical Center at 6 p.m. Class members arrived at 5 p.m. for a class picture to be taken.
An interesting program followed the evening dinner. Jimmy Miller (treasurer for the Class of ‘49) was the master of ceremonies. The highlight of the program was a slide picture presentation given by Mary Elder Lasher involving her collection of individual and group pictures of class members during the high school days. About six members spoke briefly about an incident of interest which they remembered from high school days. Frank Lowder (vice president for the Class of ‘49) spoke during the program.
One AHS high school teacher was a guest for the occasion. E.F. Wilson attended with his daughter, Ellen Talbert.
One memento prepared by artist Peggy Earp McManus and poet Sally Beaver Buckner, was a page bordered with pictures of all classmates (from the 1949 annual, Crossroads), and a photo of class officers and faculty sponsor. Beneath, printed against a faded image of Albemarle High School was a poem, “Treasure,” built on an analogy of the California gold-rushers in 1849 to the AHS class of 1949, going forth after graduation to seek their own “gold,” and cherishing the treasure of friendship. A copy is being mailed to all class members who were not in attendance for the reunion.
Chairperson Bobbie Al-dridge Owens distributed door prizes to all class members who attended.
The meeting was adjourned by singing the school song, and a benediction by Jack Eudy.
