Treasure hunters in Ridgecrest

By Tiffany Thompson, News Editor

Sunday, October 18, 2009 Students in Shannon Sanders eighth-grade science class at Ridgecrest Elemen-tary School recently got a lesson in global positioning, but with a twist.

After spending a day learning how to plot coordinates on the handheld GPS units, students were divided into groups and were given the task of hiding a treasure.

Each group was given a treasure, which consisted of candy and a free pass for bringing a drink to class. They then took their treasure and GPS unit and went in search of a hiding place in an area around the school to which they were assigned. Once the treasure was hidden, each group set the coordinate for the hiding spot and returned to the classroom.

After each group returned, the GPS units were redistributed to a different group, who then used them to follow a route leading to the coordinates and the treasure.

“This is a follow-up lesson to a study on remote sensing,” Sanders said.

“It’s the first time we’ve done this kind of activity at the school and we hope everything goes well.”

Technology Facilitator Lisa Richardson and AIG (Acade-mically and Intellectually Gifted) teacher Teresa Ingle assisted with the assignment.
