Monarch clinical program manager selected as Professional of the Year

Sunday, November 1, 2009 Ben Millsap, clinical program manager at Monarch, was honored recently as the recipient of the Professional of the Year from the Arc of North Carolina. He was selected from numerous applicants who work in the human services field from all over North Carolina.

Millsap was recognized at the Arc of NC Annual Conference in Concord on Sept. 26 where Linda Hill Guzman, chapter and advocacy specialist for the Arc of NC, shared these words: “Today’s winner far exceeds the criteria for this award. The letters of support…were numerous, full of praise and offered specific examples of his work not only as a professional in the field, but as a volunteer, and a member of the community.”

Peggy Terhune, executive director of Monarch, believes that Ben is a worthy recipient: “Ben is the kind of person who sees a need and tries to get it filled with an ongoing system wide program that will help more people than those he meets. I feel privileged to know Ben, and to be able to benefit personally and professionally from his wise council.”

In addition to the statewide award, Millsap has also been recognized as the local Professional of the Year. When he is not helping people through Monarch, he finds time to volunteer in the community.

He is the chair of the Piedmont Area Substance Abuse Provider Association, on the board of directors of Homes of Hope and is a member of Partners in Health in Stanly County.

In addition, he played a role in creating a homeless shelter in Union County known as the Community Inn. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and UNC-Charlotte and lives with his wife in Locust.

Monarch staff have received numerous Professional of the Year awards in the past several years.

Monarch provides support and resources to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse issues in 52 counties across North Carolina. Monarch is a nonprofit and is a charter member of the national organization known as The Arc.
