Thursday, June 18, 2009 June 19, 2009 09:25 am

Albemarle Academy of Dance in Albemarle and Locust will hold their 19th annual spring dance recitals June 20 at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center.
The theme of the concerts will be “Extra Extra…Dance All About It” and will feature newspaper themed numbers. The concerts will include pieces inspired by the different sections of the newspaper, including current events, weather, lifestyles, travel and the classifieds. The performers, ages 2 through 21, will be entertaining audiences with classical and contemporary ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, modern, and tumbling and acrobatic routines. Voice and theatre students at the academy will be presenting selections from the Sunday comics. Each show will be entirely different.
The concerts will also highlight several of the male instructors from the academy. Greyson Davis, tap instructor, will be presenting a solo of his intricate tap style. His style is a low-beat hoofing, while blending in a hip-hop feel, all the while keeping the roots of tap in mind. Davis has performed on board two cruise ships and for Disney. His choreography has won the top overall awards for Showstoppers nationals and made the Showstoppers National Video.
Chris Thompson, hip hop and Afro-Caribbean instructor, will be presenting Afri-can drumming, along with members of the Chris Thompson Cultural Ensem-ble as accompaniment to the Afro-Caribbean dancers. Dancer, choreographer and drummer, Thompson does it all. A renowned dance in-structor and choreographer, he has been a professional dancer for more than 20 years. His dance style is described as an Urban Jazz Style with African influences. Thompson has toured and performed in 38 states and internationally.
Ryan Frier will be performing in the advanced ballet excerpt from Agnes De Milles “Rodeo.” Frier is a ballet, tumbling and adagio instructor and will be offering boys-only training at the Albemarle studio this summer. Frier has trained from Reno to Charlotte and performed as a principal dancer with several companies.
The evening show will also spotlight Jesse Davis, graduating senior, from North Stanly High School. She will be performing a self-choreographed piece titled, “Jalouse.” Davis has been a student at AAD for 13 years. She has traveled throughout the United States as a member of the Showoffs competition dance company and has been a member of the City Youth Ballet since 1998. Davis studied on scholarship in Las Vegas, performed in Disneyworld and most recently performed the role of Spanish in the Nutcracker.
She has been an assistant teacher at the AAD for three years. She is the daughter of Pam and Dave Davis of Misenheimer and will be attending Gardner Webb University in the fall where she will continue to be involved in dance.
