SCC celebrates 10 years at Cisco Networking Academy

Sunday, June 28, 2009 — Stanly Community College (SCC) is celebrating 10 years as a regional Cisco Networking Academy site. The academy teaches Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) and Cisco Security courses.

These courses cover a range of topics, from basic networking to advanced technologies that prepare students for specialized certifications and professional careers in the IT industry. As a leader in technology, SCC has trained more than 1,547 graduates in various IT courses since the Academy’s inception.

“As instructors, we offer our students a competitive advantage as they prepare themselves for IT jobs,” said Kelly Caudle, SCC’s Cisco Networking Academy coordinator.

“The IT industry is constantly changing — bringing new challenges. Utilizing Cisco’s specialized training, our students gain skill-sets that enable them to meet these challenges head-on,” added Caudle.

SCC’s Dean of Business and Technology Merlin Amirtharaj noted that SCC serves as a regional hub for 11 local Cisco Networking Academies that range from high schools to universities; and that the academy also provides training to the Communication Workers of America on a national level through the pioneering use of online training tools such as NDG’s Netlab+ and Professional systems.

“SCC prepares students for career opportunities and globally-recognized certifications through our Cisco Networking Academy,” Amirtharaj said.

“We offer a turn-key package for our IT students through a Vue/Prometic Testing Center, located in the Whitley Technology Center on the Albemarle campus. The testing center is available for any student interested in getting their certifications.”

Caudle mentions that the IT job market hasn’t really felt the strains of the country’s struggling economy and that high-tech specialists in demand today will probably still be in demand tomorrow.

“At SCC, we offer the IT student a chance to acquire skills necessary for many businesses to function. When was the last time you walked into a business that wasn’t using a computer, or the internet, or a network?” Caudle said.
