Group participates in State 4-H Congress

Sunday, November 8, 2009 Stanly County was well represented this year at NC State 4-H Congress.

From Monday morning to Wednesday morning, Stanly County 4-H youth were quite visible.

Victory Valley 4-H Club started things off by competing in the poultry judging competition.

Angela Harvell led her team to victory by winning first place as high individual in the state, resulting in the team also placing first place in the State.

They will be attending the National Poultry Judging Competition in Louisville, Ky. in November.

Poultry judging participants were: Kayla Casico, Brandy Cleveland, Angela Harvell and Samantha Talley. Their coach was Mike Alexander.

Monday night, Dennis Collins carried the Stanly County 4-H flag with pride in the flag ceremony.

Then competing in the State 4-H Fashion Revue, Samantha Talley modeled her full length, royal blue taffeta evening gown with elegance and grace.

Tuesday night the 4-H youth participated in a history making event by attending the North Carolina 4-H Centennial Homecoming where the 2009 4-H Hall of Fame inductees were recognized.

There was also a celebration of the “past, present and future gatherings” of 4-H across North Carolina. The evening was followed by the “Rockin’ Clover Bash” at the W. Kerr Scott building on the state fairgrounds.

Wednesday, Wil Talley and Samantha Talley were dressed and polished in their business suits and were interviewed by committees for a national trip.

Stacy Talley accompanied her daughter, Emily Talley, to the Donor’s Luncheon where Emily was recognized for having received two 4-H scholarships. Emily will be attending NC State University this fall.

Before returning home on Wednesday, Stanly County 4-H’er’s did their part in helping to promote awareness of the NC 4-H 100 Centennial celebration by painting “Happy 100th Birthday, NC 4-H” on the Free Expression tunnel on the NC State campus.

The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities. More than 239,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 23,000 adult and youth volunteers.

For more information about 4-H opportunities contact Patti Talley, extension agent, 4-H & Youth Development, by calling (704) 983-3987 or at patti_talley@ncsu.edu.

Stanly County 4-H is a United Way supported agency.
