Oakboro Christmas planned

Sunday, November 8, 2009 Oakboro Museum

Oakboro Regional Museum of History’s rotating exhibit for November and December is “Toys — Everchanging,” with an emphasis on the differences over the decades.

The museum will be open from 5-7 p.m. Dec. 3, the night of the parade. The museum is free to the public; donations accepted.

Tree Lighting

Activities prior to the actual tree lighting begin at 6 p.m. on the porch of Oakboro First Baptist Church with an appearance by Miss Outstanding Teen.

At 6:15 p.m., there will be a performance by the Oakboro First Baptist Church Handbell Choir.

At 6:30 p.m., the Tree Lighting Ceremony to be held in Oakboro Town Mini Park will begin with a welcome by Oakboro Mayor Joyce Little.

2009 Christmas

Decoration Contest

All businesses are encouraged to decorate their storefront windows for the contest.

Houses and yards within the Oakboro city limits may enter the decoration contest by registering at the museum at (704) 485-4222.

Plaques will be awarded in four categories: Overall Window, People’s Choice, Most Festive, and Best Home and Yard Decoration.

Judging will take place the evening of Nov. 30. Plaques will be awarded to winners at the Tree Lighting Ceremony held in Oakboro Town Mini Park on Dec. 3.

Christmas

Tour of Homes

Christmas Tour of Homes, sponsored by Oakboro Regional Historical Foundation as a fundraiser for the preservation of Oakboro Presbyterian Church, will be from 2-5 p.m. Dec. 13 in Oakboro.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Oakboro Regional Museum. You may call the museum at (704) 485-4222 for information.

Schedule of Events

The following events are scheduled for Dec. 3 at North Main Street, Oakboro. Oakboro businesses will be open and music will be provided by Gerald Lee in Oakboro Town Mini Park beginning at 5:30 p.m.

n 5-7 p.m. — Oakboro Regional Museum will be open.

n 5-9 p.m. — Food available at 3rd Street Eatery at North Main and West 3rd streets.

n 5-6:30 p.m. — Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Main Street.

n 5:30-7 p.m. — Children and adult train rides in SunTrust parking lot. Train rides will continue following the parade.

n 6-7 p.m. — Wagon rides on Main Street with loading at 307 North Main.

n 6 p.m. — Greetings from Miss Outstanding Teen on the front porch of First Baptist Church.

n 6:15 p.m. — Music by First Baptist Handbell Choir on the front porch of the church.

n 6:30 p.m. — Tree Lighting Ceremony at Oakboro Town Mini Park.

n 7 p.m. — Christmas parade.

Oakboro Parade

The Oakboro Christmas Parade, sponsored by Oakboro Fire and Rescue, will begin at 7 p.m. The parade line-up will begin at 5 p.m. in front of Oakboro Fire Department on College Street.

Call Jim Cameron at (704) 485-1900 to register an entry in the parade. Some type of lighting on parade entries is encouraged since this is an evening parade.

Fifth Annual

Oakboro Luminaries

The Fifth Annual Oakboro Luminaries, sponsored by the Oakboro Lions Club to raise money for White Cane and Clinical Eye Research, will take place from 5-9 p.m. Dec. 3.

Luminaries will be placed on the grounds of the Oakboro Railroad Museum in honor of or in memory of someone.

Luminaries are $2 per bag and may be purchased from any member of the Oakboro Lions and at Variety Pickup in Oakboro. Call (704) 485-3574 or (704) 485-2329 to order luminaries by phone or ask questions.

Also, orders with payment may be mailed to: Oakboro Lions Club, PO Box 486, Oakboro, NC 28129.

Information needed is the name of the person being remembered or honored and by whom the donation is made.

This year, luminaries will be lighted in conjunction with events held the night of the Oakboro Parade Festivities.

Christmas

Open House

Christmas Open House festivities will take place from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 22 at The Flower Basket, 120 N. Main St., Oakboro.

Register to win a $50 gift certificate. During Open House Hours receive a 20 percent discount on any cash purchase.

Parade Rules

and Regulations

n All entries must be at the line-up area by 6:30 p.m. in order to be in the parade.

n All entries in the parade must be decorated appropriately for the season.

n All entries will keep a safe distance from the unit in front of them.

n Only horses, ponies and mules shall be ridden in the parade. Owners shall clean up the staging area before leaving the area.

n Candy only shall be tossed from any entry. Persons or groups doing so will take full responsibility for injury or accident.

n No use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco products allowed during the parade.

n Anyone not following these rules may be removed from the parade.
