Willoughby breaks 1,000-yard mark; West gets win at North

The West Stanly Colts won a close one on the road against the Comets of North Stanly Friday night, 29-21, finishing the regular season 5-6 overall and qualifying for the playoffs.
Patrick Willoughby became the 12th player in West Stanly history to reach the 1,000 yard plateau. The Colt senior had 186 yards last night and 1,050 yards for the season.

  • Soccer teams to host homeless soccer clubs
On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Pfeiffer University will host the men’s and women’s Street Soccer 945 teams out of Charlotte in a pair of exhibition games starting at 4 p.m., all a part of the annual hunger and homelessness week at Pfeiffer.

  • The cold weather won’t put a freeze on fans’ interest
More random items from the mind of the sports editor (prepare yourselves):
    - There are two important sports items that were late for this edition of the paper but will be on my Sports Connection blog today.
The announcement from the NCHSAA regarding the brackets should have been around 6 p.m. on Saturday, so checked

  • Stanly Cup, YVC title, playoff trips on the line
South Stanly (7-3) at Albemarle (10-0)
The annual Route 52 war between the Rebel Bulls and the Bulldogs always has ramifications for both teams, and Friday’s matchup is no exception.
Albemarle has three different goals that can be checked off their list with a win at home over the Bulls.

  • Funny how an opinion changes quickly
I am not always the biggest fan of the word “sportsmanship” simply because there are times that the concept is thrown around too freely.
In my recent column about the Georgia-LSU game and the parade of celebration penalties, I talked about how sportsmanship does not mean you should not be allowed to be joyful.

  • Bulldogs win streak snapped by Rosman
The Albemarle volleyball team had not faced a team in their 2009 season that was on as big of a win streak as they had been until Tuesday’s regional finals against Rosman.
Entering the match, the Tigers had won 27 matches in a row while the Bulldogs had not been beaten in 25 straight since their first game of the season.
Behind 26 kills from senior Joanna Whitmire, Rosman advanced to their second state finals in school history with a 3-1 win against Albemarle Tuesday night.

  • Knights, ‘Dogs move on; Colts lose to Wolves
The state soccer playoffs opened on Wednesday with two 1A Stanly schools earning wins in the opening round.
    Albemarle 3, Highland Tech 1
As a wildcard in the playoffs, the Bulldogs started the 1A playoffs on the road in Gaston County to face the Highland Tech Rams.

    Tip of the Week
Proper Care of Your Equipment: Now that you've spent a small fortune on your new bowling gear, the last thing you want to do is ruin it.

  • High School Playoff Updates
Men’s Soccer: Three teams from Stanly County have qualified for the 2009 state playoffs.
In the 1A bracket, Gray Stone (15-2) will host North Moore (10-9) Wednesday afternoon at 4.

  • ‘Dogs top Warriors, reach regional finals
Albemarle’s fourth-round playoff matchup would be the fourth time this season that the ‘Dogs would take the court against rival West Montgomery.
Both teams had gone further than any volleyball teams in the schools’ histories by reaching the fourth round of the 1A playoffs.

  • West girls, Gray Stone squads qualify for state
Teams and individuals from Stanly County raced in the regionals on Saturday in the hopes of reaching the state finals this weekend.
    2A Boys
West Stanly’s Matt Poplin took ninth place at the 2A regionals at Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury.

  • North Stanly football falls in overtime to Piedmont
The North Stanly football team came within two minutes of winning their fourth game this season.

  • Gray Stone sweeps county, YVC titles
The Gray Stone cross-country teams were recently crowned the 2009 Yadkin Valley Conference champions as well as claiming the county championships.

  • Gray Stone soccer claims YVC title, tops E. Montgomery
Postponed for 24 hours by rain, the Gray Stone men’s soccer team had to wait an extra day before their showdown with top-ranked East Montgomery.
The Knights would get an early lead and never trail in winning the Yadkin Valley Conference championship 2-1 over the Eagles.
