West girls, Gray Stone squads qualify for state

Cross-Country Regionals

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 Teams and individuals from Stanly County raced in the regionals on Saturday in the hopes of reaching the state finals this weekend.

2A Boys

West Stanly’s Matt Poplin took ninth place at the 2A regionals at Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury.

Poplin’s time of 17:26 gives him one of the five open spots in the state finals for runners whose teams did not finish in the top four and qualify for states.

The Colts finished in sixth place with 155 points, behind Salisbury (143), Surry Central (129), West Stokes (119), Cuthbertson (117) and Central Davidson (63).

North Stanly’s Jeff McClure finished 39th in the region with a time of 19:07 and the Comets placed 15th overall.

2A Girls

The West Stanly girls’ third-place finish gives the Colts a trip to the state finals for the second consecutive season.

Brooke Benton’s time of 22:13 was good for 16th place, making her the top finisher for West.

Other top-five finishers for the Colts were: Taylor Ferree (22:30-25nd), Nicole Kippes (22:38-30th), Evan Biggers (22:43-31st) and Katlyn Speights (23:07-34th).

West Stokes won the team event with a score of 80, followed by Salisbury (116), West Stanly (124) and West Davidson (128).

North Stanly’s Holli Chandler was the top finisher from Stanly County, taking ninth place with a time of 21:23 and qualifying for the states as an individual.

The Comets finished 8th overall with a score of 179.

1A Boys

Mount Airy's Matus Kriska set the pace early with South's Sean Kluttz and Gray Stone's Dalton Wally in a pack about twenty yards behind. With a quarter mile to go, Kluttz caught Kriska and moved slightly ahead.

Kriska fought back and edged the Rebel Bull senior in a sprint to the finish 17:04 to 17:05. Wally was next in 17:17, giving the Knights three points.

South's Alex Thompson and Gray Stone's Kaleb Medlin raced together with Thompson edging Medlin by a second 17:42 to 17:43 for seventh and eighth placed. Mygel Bergstresser's came in 11th in 17:58.

Harrison Latimer (18:17-17th) and Joseph Sutlive (18:52-24th) were the final two scorers for the Knights.

The Knights scored a team low of 63 points to take the 1A-Midwest team title. Lake Norman Charter (77) took second with Bishop McGuinness (91) in third.

With one team spot remaining, the Rebel Bulls were in good position to get to state as Kluttz and Thompson's finish totaled nine points. Austin Springer (19:23-33rd), Landon Fraley (19:24-34th) and Matt Gatien's (20:17-42nd) totals gave South 118 points and a chance to run another week.

Kluttz, Wally, Thompson and Medlin earned spots on the All-Midwest Region team.

1A Girls

The Knights took second place in the regionals despite the rainy conditions and an ankle sprain by Yadkin Valley runner of the year Hunter Latimer just 24 hours earlier, missing the regional title by one point to Bishop McGuiness

After three runners crossed it before her, freshman Amber Watkins flew across the finish line with a time of 21:16.

Nearly 20 seconds behind her, Latimer managed to perform exceptionally well with a soft cast on her left foot, placing 8th overall. Teammate Janna Featherstone (21:47), who was paces behind Latimer, gave the Knights three runners in the top-ten and an early lead.

South’s Erin Thompson (22:33) finished 12th and qualified for states as an individual. As a team, the Bulls finished in 7th place.

Gray Stone’s number four, Mary Bergstresser, outsprinted three opponents to place at 17th, and was followed by teammate Katherine Barrows (36th) to give the Knights a final score of 62 points.

Gray Stone qualified to compete in the 1A state championship meet this Saturday in Winston-Salem at Tanglewood Park.
