Funny how an opinion changes quickly

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, November 5, 2009 I am not always the biggest fan of the word “sportsmanship” simply because there are times that the concept is thrown around too freely.

In my recent column about the Georgia-LSU game and the parade of celebration penalties, I talked about how sportsmanship does not mean you should not be allowed to be joyful.

Tuesday night, I saw a display of celebration-turned-intimidation at the 1A regional finals.

With three buses from Transylvania County out in the parking lot, the gym was filled with Rosman fans that behaved within the boundaries of what is acceptable for fan behavior.

Rosman plays in the Smoky Mountain Conference, made up of teams from the western NC mountains.

Having graduated from on of those schools, Hayesville in 1991, I have seen more despicable displays of bad sportsmanship and outright criminal behavior than I care to recall.

For anyone that believes that the Albemarle-North Stanly rivalry gets heated, the ones between Hayesville, Murphy, Robbinsville and Swain County are worse with a lot less common ground and friendships.

I remember one night sitting behind my Hayesville women’s basketball team at the sectional tournament in Tuscola (I was the team’s manager and I still have the letterman’s jacket to prove it...don’t ask if it fits).

The sister of one of the Robbinsville players charged the court after her little sister fouled out and slapped the ref right across the mouth.

A few things about the Rosman team’s behavior bothers me. The Tigers’ bench players jumping up after every kill, and a yellow card was issued to a Rosman player for a taunting yell not three feet from the face of an Albemarle player with only the net in between.

Also, one player made a gesture which looked like it was across the court to an official pointing two fingers to her eyes as if to tell the ref to watch more carefully.

Albemarle played in their usual manner: passionate, energetic and not disrespectful to the opposition, celebrating amongst themselves after a good point and not directing anything to anyone else.

When the Albemarle players emerged from the locker room after the game, both the remaining Bulldog fans and the Rosman fans applauded, which showed a great respect for both teams.

State athletic officials in the offseason need to explore the possibility of creating a policy for team behavior.

Sportsmanship is a delicate balance between discipline and enthusiasm, but those are not contradictory terms when balanced right.
