The cold weather won’t put a freeze on fans’ interest

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, November 8, 2009 More random items from the mind of the sports editor (prepare yourselves):

- There are two important sports items that were late for this edition of the paper but will be on my Sports Connection blog today.

The announcement from the NCHSAA regarding the brackets should have been around 6 p.m. on Saturday, so checked

Also, the soccer teams of Albemarle and Gray Stone both played second-round matchups on Saturday but those results were late for this edition.

As soon as I have scores on those games, I’ll pass those along as well.

- Speaking of soccer, the Bulldogs had a long trip Saturday night heading to Hayesville.

It used to take me nearly six hours to make the drive back when I was a Pfeiffer student, but thanks to I-26, one can drive to Spartanburg, north to Asheville and west to Clay County, and save an hour on the trip.

For anyone that has ridden longer than 15 minutes on a bus, imagine riding five hours, play a game and ride five hours back.

Makes the Lewis and Clark expedition seem like a picnic trip to Morrow Mountain.

- Nearly every outdoor sport runs so long in high school that one of the factors you have to deal with as a team is a major climate change from the start of the season to the end.

There has been some talk of shortening the football season and the playoffs, which I have been advocating since the NCHSAA subdivided the playoffs in 2001.

We have too many basketball coaches that do not have adequate time to prepare their players for the season because most of their team is still playing football.

With subdivided playoffs, we will not get to see would be a great game if Albemarle or Monroe took on Mount Airy or others in the 1A bracket.

- A quick addition to Thursday’s article about the Tri-County Merchants adult softball team.

The Merchants’ entire season record was 38-15 and other team members that contributed include the following names: Bernard Kimrey (coach), Marvin Smith, Truett Boles, Donald Woodall, James Peck, Shelly Smith, Tony Ussery, Larry Fast, Joe Hatley, Jeff Barbee, Bob Gifford, Doug Harris, Moody Lemons, Dale Fox, David Rothwell, Rob Jackson, Danny Harris, Johnny Musser, Johnny Owens, and Harold Hurley.

- I can’t imagine how hard those hits on the football field felt in freezing temperatures.

Sitting on top of the Albemarle press box last night with the wind blowing will test your love for the game of football.
