Metro Roundup: HCAC honors Rose-Hulman athletes
Rose-Hulman freshman tennis player Sam Danesis and defensive lineman Adam Helmerich have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports, according to results released Monday by the conference office.
Danesis was named the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the first time this season after her third consecutive perfect weekend of play. She swept Julie Gehring of Mount St. Joseph 6-0, 6-0 and topped Jessica Hanson of Transylvania 6-1, 6-2 in singles play, while teaming up with Katy Zawadski for 8-1 and 8-2 doubles wins.
With the victories, Danesis improved to 7-0 in singles play and 7-0 in doubles play, with perfect 6-0 marks against HCAC competition. The Engineers, who return home for a 5:30 p.m. match Wednesday against Marian, stand 6-1 overall and 5-1 in league play after finishing 1-8 last spring.
Helmerich was named Defensive Football Player of the Week after spearheading an effort that helped result in Rose-Hulman’s first shutout since the 2002 season.
Helmerich returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to give Rose-Hulman a 35-0 lead as part of a 56-0 win over Concordia Chicago on Saturday. The effort marked one of two touchdowns scored by the Engineer defense.
He added three tackles and one tackle for loss from the right defensive tackle position in the victory.
The football team improved to 2-1 on the season and returns to action on Saturday at North Park.
In another Rose-Hulman football honor:
-- Receiver gets Exchange Club award — Becoming the first Rose-Hulman receiver to gain 100 or more yards in a game in nearly four years, senior Ryan Robinson has earned the Exchange Club of Terre Haute’s Football Player of the Week for the Engineers’ 56-0 victory over Concordia last Saturday on Phil Brown Field.
Robinson will be recognized at the Exchange Club’s weekly luncheon meeting today at the Holiday Inn.
Robinson, a two-year letterman, had a career-high five receptions for 100 yards. His 18-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Hummel opened the scoring for the Engineers in the non-conference game.
The last 100-yard game by a Rose-Hulman receiver came on Nov. 13, 2002, when Rob Kief had 16 catches for 135 yards against Centre.
Tennis
-- Tsymbalov wins flight — At Muncie, Indiana State’s Anton Tsymbalov won flight A of the Ball State Invitational over Wichita State’s Tiago Espirito Santo.
ISU newcomers Mpilo Migogo and Bruno Echer picked up their first collegiate experience, falling in the first round in flight B. Echer did capture his first collegiate win over Bradley’s Alex Roby 7-5, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.
Michael Wenham was the final competitor for the Sycamores. Despite an early exit in his first match in flight C, the sophomore advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket and beat Valparaiso’s Tom Litscher 7-6, 3-6, 10-7.
“It was good to have some matches and nice to have a win in the strongest flight in the tournament,” coach Jonas Piibor said. “We have a lot of work to do, especially with the new guys, as we learn to control the things that we can control. We hope to become stronger and mentally tougher on the courts and that is something that we intend to work on.”
In doubles, Migogo and Tsymbalov came up short in their first round match and consolation match after being paired for the first time in competition. Echer and Wenham advanced to the semi-finals of flight B doubles but fell to Bradley’s team of Matt Metully and Evgeng Samoylov.
