From the Press Box

From the Press Box: ISU can’t get out of field position jail

All right all of you armchair coaches, you Vince Lombardis of the XBox, you dominators of Madden football, time to stand up and be counted.....more>>

  • From the Press Box: Donald Brown vs. Joseph Addai, time to start the debate?
Donald Brown vs. Joseph Addai ... is it time for the debate over who should shoulder the Indianapolis Colts’ running load to begin? If Sunday was the time for the debate, it was over by technical knockout in the second quarter of the Colts’ 42-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome. On Brown’s second run from scrimmage, he strained his left shoulder. He did not return and was not on the sideline during the second half.

  • From the Press Box: ISU finally has some time ... and the players need it
Indiana State’s football season has hit the halfway point. Saturday’s 62-7 loss at No. 3 Northern Iowa was, unfortunately for the Sycamores, a fitting rotten cherry to go on a sundae that has been spoiled almost from drop. The nation’s longest losing streak? Still going strong.

  • From the Press Box: NCAA did right thing for Kelly
If there’s one thing many of us have learned through life experience, it’s that no one should ever judge the way someone else grieves.
Grief doesn’t follow a plan. Grief doesn’t stay faithful to a timeline. Grief can’t be codified. Grief is never, ever a one-size-fits-all proposition.

  • Bad times are when ISU football will know who its friends are
The Sycamores filed off Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in defeat for the 30th straight time on Saturday after South Dakota State defeated the Sycamores 41-0. Without any offense to speak of — ISU had 90 yards of total offense against the Jackrabbits — the Sycamores had no chance.

  • From The Press Box: Caldwell’s calls put onus on players
For his maiden voyage in charge in the National Football League, Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell wasn’t shy about making play calls that could have turned him from a first-time NFL winner to loser and drawn immediate heat to himself.

  • From The Press Box: Moral victory milepost for Sycamores
After dire predictions by some of a historic blowout, Indiana State’s football team hung in there at Football Championship Subdivision opponent Louisville on Saturday. It was a 10-point game deep into the third quarter before ISU eventually lost 30-10.

  • From The Press Box: MotoGP is a fun racing event, but did enough fans see it?
The operative thing to keep in mind when watching MotoGP is to not judge a book by its cover. The bikes? At first glance, they don’t look all that impressive to the untrained eye. Really, they don’t look that much different from a spruced-up motorcycle you’d see flying past you on Third Street on a Saturday night.

  • From Terre Haute to the Major Leagues: Former Sycamore catcher teaming with MLB protege Stephen Strasburg
Nevin Ashley, a former Indiana State catcher, will play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League in October and November. A teammate of Ashley’s will be pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the Washington Nationals’ recent No. 1 draft pick. Strasburg signed a multimillion-dollar contract with the Nationals’ organization earlier this week.

  • From the Press Box: Quincy loss was worst-case scenario for ISU football
There’s no point in sugar-coating Indiana State’s 26-20 fell-from-ahead overtime loss to Quincy on Thursday. It was the worst case scenario for the Sycamore program.
