Metro Roundup: ISU’s Roberts named MVFC Offensive Player of Week

Tribune-Star staff report

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Roberts capped his first victory as a starter by being named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league office Sunday.

Roberts scored twice in ISU’s streak-snapping 17-14 homecoming win over Western Illinois, including a school-record 91-yard scamper in the second quarter. Roberts also scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter that helped give ISU the victory to snap its 33-game losing skid.

In the week’s previous games, Roberts also reached the end zone twice and threw for another score. Roberts is the first Indiana State player to score multiple touchdowns in consecutive games since 2004, when Jake Shields recorded a pair of rushing touchdowns against Western Illinois and Missouri State. Roberts’ 160 rushing yards were the fourth-most in ISU history for a quarterback and the most since Sheraton Fox in 1999.

The Sycamores return to action against nationally-ranked Southern Illinois at noon Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

• Local team fourth — At Phoenix, Terre Haute’s Volkers Group 60-and-over team finished in fourth place in the annual national competition last week.

Terre Haute was seeded with the seven highest rated teams in the country and played in the National League playoffs; 24 other teams played in lower divisions.

Terre Haute began the tourney with a double-header loss to last year’s National Champion, California, and last year’s American League champion, San Diego, then came back with a win over Chicago before losing to San Antonio.

Volkers Group finished the qualifying round with necessary wins over Rhode Island and Kansas City to take fourth place in the top division. Then Terre Haute lost its first playoff game to the same Kansas City team, eliminating it from the competition.

Local players on the team are Harvey Austin, Andy Pickering, Danny Robinson, Larry Roesch, Jim Shaw, Gene Sinclair, Wally Brant, Frank Volkers, Dave Weaver and Larry Weaver.
