STEPHANIE SALTER: Friends don’t let friends commit felony hyperbole
Ever since I read “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift, I have been an admirer of well-crafted satire, sarcasm and irony. Been known to use the persuasive little devils myself on occasion.

STEPHANIE SALTER: Remembering a man who soared high and proud
My friend Bob Cameron died this past week. Among the many things I learned from our friendship was to never again hear that someone really old has passed, then respond with a shallow, “Oh, well, sounds like he had a good, long run. I guess it was time.”

TRIBUNE-STAR EDITORIAL: Lax law and unlimited gifts
It was the party of the year, and, thanks to telecommunications giant AT&T, state Rep. Trent Van Haaften was there. On Jan. 19, the night before Barack Obama was sworn in as president, AT&T paid more than $1,600 for the state legislator and his wife to attend the Indiana Inaugural Ball in Washington.

FLASHPOINT: Political leaders want to see changes in ethics laws
I know it is tempting to portray the Indiana General Assembly as having a deaf ear toward ethical behavior, but I find such opinions do not match the commitment that the men and women in the Indiana House and Senate have toward meeting the public’s trust.

TRIBUNE-STAR EDITORIAL: Solemn pride in Griffin’s heroism
No gesture of thanks can adequately repay a sacrificed life. Remembering is the best a community and a nation can do. Terre Haute observed Veterans Day 2009 in a fitting, proper way. The expressions of gratitude for a fallen hometown soldier — U.S. Army Sgt. Dale Griffin.

MARK BENNETT: Lunsford’s new tome an example of penning a book and hitting nothing but net
Mike Lunsford writes like Pete Maravich shot jumpers. Sometimes, he makes the literary craft seem so simple, effortless, such as a short bankshot, flowing fluidly off the Pistol’s right fingertips.

FLASHPOINT: Independent voice needed to bridge gap between parties
