Voters say ‘Who cares’ to Series

Voters in this week’s www.weatherforddemocrat.com online poll are, by and large, not interested in the outcome of the World Series.

A little less than 59 percent said the Fall Classic held less importance than the football season.

The weekly poll is not scientific in nature and reflects only the opinions of those who voted.

Of the voters who cited a prospective winner in Major League Baseball’s championship series, more than 26 percent felt like the Yankees would win, while slightly more than 14 percent chose the Philadelphia Phillies.

After taking a 3-1 advantage in the seven-game series, the Yankees fell to Philadelphia 8-6 Monday night to take the series back to New York for Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7.

Apparently a World Series that only involved teams from the northeast drew little interest from online voters, in spite of two former Texas players, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Texiera, playing key roles for the Yankees.

The long drought since a playoff appearance by the Rangers, coupled with recent success of the Cowboys may have taken baseball off the radar for most North Texans.

Dean Corn told the Democrat’s Friday Talk Back section, “I don’t even know who’s in the series.”

Another local voice, Ti Herron, said she didn’t keep up with baseball either. “I have no clue,” she said. “I watch HGTV.”

The Talk Back participants who did pick a team were split.

“The Yankees,” said Steve Varney, “They’re the better team.”

Shawn Murphy disagrees. “Phillies will win it for the second year in a row,” he said. “They still have the same team.”
